This is on the Torchlight curriculum -- we don't homeschool， but I'm one of those weirdos who browses curricula booklists just to see what's out there。 Sometimes， I find a gem， and this is one of those times。 And， yes， I borrowed it （via Libby） based solely on the cover。 It looks fun， we can try it for free， why not？ It was listed under Science， but we aren't doing lessons so who cares？ Surprisingly， this book about dragons and marshmallows is actually a decent little scientific method book。 How This is on the Torchlight curriculum -- we don't homeschool， but I'm one of those weirdos who browses curricula booklists just to see what's out there。 Sometimes， I find a gem， and this is one of those times。 And， yes， I borrowed it （via Libby） based solely on the cover。 It looks fun， we can try it for free， why not？ It was listed under Science， but we aren't doing lessons so who cares？ Surprisingly， this book about dragons and marshmallows is actually a decent little scientific method book。 How does one go about diagnosing a sick dragon？ Zoey has to do some research （into reptiles）， and some experiments， and noodle on the results。 She writes out her plan， and she knows about the importance of control， etc etc。 All of this is woven into the narrative。 Built into the story is some Nature info as well -- what is warm-blooded/ cold-blooded？ What do reptiles eat？ These aren't delivered via callouts or end notes， but via Zoey's thoughts about her previous experiences with animals。 From this recalled Nature info， she extrapolates possibilities and devises her experiments。 The only thing I don't love is Dad being a character who can't understand because he can't see magical creatures。 Although， to be fair， he is written pretty well for this situation。 How to deal when your kiddo only wants to tell your co-parent whatever the problem is， because they are sure you won't understand？ I feel like Zoey's dad is a solid model for us adults。 So， yeah。 A book about science that is also about magical creatures shouldn't work， but it does！ Is it suitable for proper lessons， a la Torchlight？ I'm on the fence about that。。。 so I'll encourage you to preread and decide for yourself。 It's brief， less than two hours for a grown up。 N。B。 Torchlight recs this for read aloud a couple years younger than our son （8yo）。 He's already learned the Nature content， and once said （with grest impatience） "I know all this already， Mom！" -- but he was totally engaged by the story， and I still like the scientific method part。 We both enjoyed it enough to try the next one。 。。。more

I read this with my 9yo and she’s probably too advanced for it but she loved it anyway and I thought it was fine too。 I do enjoy a book where the kids are smart and independent but NOT as the result of adults being assholes （they’re great）。 This isn’t genius kids lit but it’s solid and she’ll prob read the whole series。

I read this one out loud to my 5yo and we both really enjoyed it。 I love the blend of fantasy and scientific method， and Zoe is a super cute and spunky character with a big heart。 We definitely will continue this series！

Simple and relatable for J。 The book contains magical creatures， but no magic。 The story illustrates endurance and trial and error。 As well as a healthy need for parental guidance。 We will read others in the series。

My daughter （starting at age 5？） LOVES this series and so do I。 Great mix of science and magic， lovable funny characters， complicated situations where Zoey has to do hard things （but not so hard it is traumatic to read）。 I was surprised I just stumbled across the series， I feel like it should be wildly famous。

Such a cute chapter book series！ These books involve so many fun animals and ideas that will definitely keep any kid entertained。 I also love this series because the main character is a person of color。 Also with the popularity of STEAM rising these books involve a lot of that。

I was surprised by this one。 The integration of science， along with a female main character of color was my draw。 It turned out to be so much more！ The balance of science and magic was charming。 I particularly loved how this book was such an accessible introduction to the elements of fantasy。 I would just love to read this book aloud to first or second graders！！
